In a move to boost fish reproduction and production, the State Fisheries Department has imposed a 61-day ban on deep sea fishing starting from April 15 until June 14. The ban applies to all fishermen, big and small, and prohibits fishing in the sea. All fishing restrictions are also in force within a 12 nautical mile radius from the coast.
According to experts, this ban is expected to give marine fish species the opportunity to move freely in the sea, thus increasing their chances of reproduction. The State Fisheries Department is confident that this measure will help replenish the fish stock and promote a sustainable fishing industry.
Last year, the department reported that seven trawlers had gone to sea despite the ban. However, the administration has taken swift action to enforce the ban this year.
Piyal Sardar, the Assistant Fisheries Officer for South 24 Parganas District, explained that the ban on deep sea fishing has been in effect for 61 days every year and has proven to be effective in increasing fish production.
